DEFINITION:
A Superintendent is a leader who is charged with job administration and management of the company’s work force. You may be a Pipe Superintendent, a Dirt Superintendent, a General Superintendant, or other. In that capacity, you are the leader charged with executing the work related to that specific scope of work.
A Superintendent at Advanced Earthworks must ensure that the following objectives are met:
First of all, you must keep in mind that the company must operate in a safe and efficient manner to produce our work product. You are the person who must ensure that we safely, efficiently and optimally maximize our profit while doing so.
You must be aware of what is going on around you. You must keep tabs on your crew members and ensure that they are performing the work utilizing the means and methods the company has developed. Means and methods are critically important because that is what the company uses to make sure the quality we expect to provide is actually provided on the job.
Efficiency means that you manage the resources at your disposal to get the work done quickly while maintaining quality and controlling costs. You will be expected to fill many different positions, as required by the needs of the job to excel. Sometimes you may need to operate machinery of varying descriptions in order to make sure your crew is operating efficiently. You will direct subordinates such as operators, laborers, and truck drivers in the execution of the work the company performs. You are the front line of operations and the first representative of the company that is charged with ensuring the means and methods, ethics, standards, and image of the company are maintained. |
Daily Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creates and executes project work plans with project manager based on POA(Plan of Action).
- Manages daily field operations of project making sure resources are scheduled, materials are on hand and locates have been called if necessary.
- All daily reports, time cards, installed and received quantities of materials, equipment hours, fuel logs and safety program related items will be completed and prepared for delivery to the PM by 8:00am the following morning.
- Promotes and enforces company means and methods and industry standards.
- Minimizes our exposure to risk on project thru actively leading safety meetings and ensuring general public is protected.
- Assists project manager with daily time card input.
- Chain of Command followed at all times regardless of the situation.
- Create a positive working relationship with owner’s field representative, governmental oversight and inspectors.
- Conducts field inspections and investigations of mechanized equipment to determine the use and care given equipment when abuses or malfunctioning are found. When afore items are found, they will be documented and reported thru the chain of command.
- Knowledge of the operation of dozers, excavators, graders, rollers(compaction equipment), paving machines, tractors, trailers, and other heavy mechanized construction equipment
- Ability to organize field work, i.e., adjusts crew members toward effective work methods and meet budgets.
- Ability to give oral and/or written directions to Equipment Operators and laborers. Supervise the performance of their work.
- Ability to train/lead the equipment operating staff in the methods of operating and adjusting equipment and to train/lead the laborer staff in the methods of executing the work as required by the specific job.
- Knowledge of the problems involved in moving/mobilizing heavy mechanized equipment from one location to another.
- May be required to learn and utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the company, office, or related units i.e., Trimble GPS, Heavy Job, job costing software etc.

Requirements:
Experience:
Four (4) years of experience in work involving the use, maintenance, and operation of heavy mechanized highway construction and maintenance equipment. Must understand the means and methods employed by the company to execute the specific type of work related to each job. Must be able to read plans. Must be able to plan ahead and coordinate job related activities such as material deliveries on-time, locating of utilities, sub-contractor needs, etc.
License:
Appointees will be required to possess a valid driver's license only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
It is preferred that Appointees possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Human Resource Department. |
