About the Bitterroot Valley Area
The Bitterroot Valley is one of the most picturesque places in the world. It is surrounded by the Rocky Mountain’s Bitterroot Range on the west and the Sapphire Range to the east. Adjacent to the largest designated wilderness area in the lower 48, it’s a paradise for recreationists and outdoor enthusiasts alike. World class fishing, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Lakes, rivers, trailheads, bike paths, and ski hills are all close by.
The Bitterroot Valley, (also know as “The Banana Belt” of Montana because of its mild climate), is adorned with quaint towns, breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and friendly people. Along the 96 mile long valley you will find the towns of Florence, Stevensville, Victor, Corvallis, Hamilton, Darby and Sula. All have a rich history and charm all their own. The population of Ravalli County after the 2004 Census was 39,376 with projections of 46,120 in 2010 and 60,030 in 2025.
During their voyage of discovery, Lewis and Clark named the valley for the flowering plant abundant to the region. Ravalli County, which encompasses most of the Bitterroot Valley, features Hamilton as the county seat. Hamilton, the fastest growing town in Montana, is centrally located in the middle of the Bitterroot Valley and is the hub of the surrounding communities. Each town along the valley boasts its own school district. There are also five private schools in the area.
The recreational opportunities through out The Bitterroot Valley are the best anywhere. Imagine being minutes from world class fly fishing, hunting, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, boating, swimming, downhill and cross country skiing, and snowmobiling. Not to mention, bird watching, wild life observation and picture postcard views.
There are two wildlife refuges and miles of wilderness area to explore. If you are willing to travel a little further, the possibilities are endless. You can enjoy Flathead Lake, Bannack State Park and Ghost Town, Yellowstone National Park, and Glacier National Park just to name a few.
The city of Missoula is 40 miles north of Hamilton. This is where you will find The University of Montana, a thriving downtown area, shopping, dining, arts and cultural events to rival any metropolitan area.
The nearest commercial airport is in Missoula as well. The distance from Hamilton is 46 miles. The Missoula International Airport is host to Big Sky, Delta, Horizon, Northwest, Alaska Air, and United Airlines. From here it’s just hours to some of the countries great destinations. Las Vegas, Seattle, Denver, and Los Angeles are close enough to enjoy a weekend get-a-way.
